Fantastic Creatures · Paper Dragon
The carrier who will not take a page somebody is reading
Lorafeed · Original fiction and workshop notes · November 2, 2026
What gives the dragon purpose?
A folded dragon carries messages between archive shelves. One morning it refuses to deliver a letter because the page would be missing from a book still being read.
Choose the original page when the dragon's body and task create different obligations. The reader has an understandable request too. A soft call-name makes the creature someone to consult, while the archive designation records where its work began.
A small constructed creature benefits from a name that can be called softly. Paper implies vulnerability and revision. Keep its personal identity distinct from the title of the document that gave it shape.
A folded body has a source
The dragon's material is part of the request. A page can be a message, a creature, and a reader's unfinished work under different conditions. Decide which change makes the dragon possible and preserve that rule. A soft call-name works across a desk; a catalogue designation can identify the original sheet. The creature should have a preference before it refuses anything, perhaps a shelf, a folding routine, or the kind of silence it enjoys while waiting.
Availability and willingness are separate conditions
The carrier model checks the page first, the dragon's present choice second, and then rest and stamina. A current reader or a declined delivery blocks flight without spending paper provision. These are fictional agency rules, not a claim about constructed life. Follow the event log to stage a request that can receive an actual answer. Offering blank paper creates another possibility without automatically obliging the dragon to become a different message.
Let the first self-written sentence matter
The librarian can ask what the dragon wants to write, but should not dictate a suitably touching answer. It might request a larger landing space or decline to explain a private preference. An earned folded-name can record a chosen delivery rather than obedient service. The next visitor should learn the request procedure from someone besides the dragon's maker. A creature feels independent when its ordinary boundary remains usable after the scene's initial surprise is over.
